It's only been forty years

Today's the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King. He's sort of become a canonized Rorschach, almost everyone being fond of the idea of Dr. King, and everyone projecting their own ideas on to him, from black nationalists to socialists to conservatives actually suggesting his "I have a dream" speech indicates he'd be opposed to Affirmative Action. Some of these have relationship to things King actually said and stood for, and some not so much.

But the thing that sticks out for me, right now, is that this was only forty years ago. King was regarded by the FBI as the most dangerous man in America, he was accused of being un-American when he spoke out against the Vietnam war, and millions were relieved when he died. In light of this, all the accusations flying around of Rev. Wright being an anti-American racist extremist are even more absurd. The shit King lived through, and African-Americans lived through, it wasn't so long ago and it leaves a mark.
